Mike Blundin

Director of Product Management

Savantis Systems

Abstract:

Server Consolidation with Database Area Networks (DAN)

Today, due to the recent explosion of servers in the data center and the rapid adoption of e-business applications, IT executives face significant new challenges and costs in managing their IT infrastructure. These challenges have thrust server consolidation into the forefront, creating a muddled view of the ‘what’ and most importantly, the ‘how’. This is where Database Area Networks (DAN) can aid the data center.

Pooling resources is certainly not a revolutionary idea, it has been occurring since the Romans introduced the Aqueduct. Creating a common ‘area network’ of resources has allowed us to access and use these resources in a more efficient and cost-effective manner. Throughout time this idea of an area network has been reused for electricity, phone service, networking, storage, and applications.

Michael Blundin, Director of Product Management at Savantis, will introduce the Database Area Network, and what it means for today’s data center infrastructure and server consolidation.

Bio:

Mike Blundin is the Director or Product Management.  Mike brings to Savantis extensive entrepreneurial experience and a proven track record in product development, planning and strategy.  Prior to joining Savantis Mike was the Director of Product Management at Vignette Corporation, where he developed the vision, strategy and roadmap for Vignette’s acquired products and technologies.

Prior to Vignette, Mike was a co-founder of DataSage where he held a variety of product and marketing positions.  DataSage was acquired by Vignette for over $550M.  Mike holds a BA in Physical Sciences from Colgate University in Hamilton, NY.

Topics Include:

Why Area Networks

Hard to believe but the concept of Area Networks certainly did not start on the networking level. Instead think about the distribution of our resources such as electricity or phone lines, they are all based on switching technologies which enable resource pooling and distribution. Obviously the dawn of networking area networks such as LAN or WAN evolved this idea, which also includes the concept of Storage Area Networks (SAN), an important milestone on the way to DAN.

·          Overview of Area Networks through time

·          What Area Networks mean to those implementing them

·          Switch based Storage technology begins a new game

Server Consolidation Solutions

As with most IT plans there can be several ways in which to get to the end result, however with Database Server Consolidation, in fact all server consolidation, the way in which you implement your plan will make a tremendous difference. We will begin to talk about using Hardware to consolidate, also known as Blade Servers and conclude with what is being termed Database Area Network or DAN technology.

·          Blade Servers

·          Clustering

·          Schema Consolidation

·          Manual DB Relocation and Consolidation

·          DAN

Database Area Network

Through the years each level of the data center has become virtualized, storage, network, apps, etc. Somehow we forgot the database level, why? It can be somewhat more challenging to create a solution that enables the pooling of disparate database resources, while also insuring high-availability and security. So why even bother with creating a DAN and what exactly is a DAN?

·          Database Servers are simply over-provisioned

·          High availability is needed but costly

·          The database level is growing as we speak

·          Switch technology on the database level

Results & Benefits

OK, so the ‘idea’ makes sense, but at this point it is critical to dive a little deeper into what a DAN can provide for the Data Center . Beyond this the presentation will look at the end-results to expect from a DAN. Michael will discuss how a DAN can allow for greater visibility throughout the data center, optimize resources, insure a greater amount of High Availability, and more.

·          Data Center Visibility

·          Resource Optimization

·          High Availability

·          Data Security

  •        Server Consolidation
